For Christmas I got a nice Bluetooth 2.0 headset which supports the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP). The first profile enables your computer to send 2 channel high quality audio over a Bluetooth connection. The second profile enables audio and video control from the Bluetooth device.

As Apple includes Bluetooth 2.0 in all their customer pc’s, I obviously assumed that this would be ideal for use on my MacBook. The more surprisec I was to find out that at this moment Mac OS X Tiger has NO support for both of these profiles. As a result, when I listen to iTunes music on my nice new headset it sounds as if I’m listening to some lame AM radio station. There seems a solution underway as the new Leopard Developers Preview has A2DP support, and rumors go that the 10.4.9 release might include the profiles too. Is this a foresight of some Apple Bluetooth-audio products coming soon?
