So, BarCampLondon2 is over and I really had a good time. This was my first unconference and I was just amazed by the quality of presentations and topics. During day 1 I even got to give a presentation on Education 2.0 and about 15 people got me into a discussion about what Education 2.0 should be. Here are some quick highlights of my BarCampLondon2 experience (in random order).
OpenID
The concept of a OpenID system first came to my attention in the Identity 2.0 keynote by Dick Hardt in 2005. Simon Willison had a nice talk on day 2 explaining what OpenID is and what the strengths are. I am totally convinced and therefore upgraded this WordPress blog with a OpenID login system. Additionally I convinced Alper to update the soon to be released FourStarters site with an OpenID login too. See Simon Willison’s website and his presentation if you want to be convinced too, or go to the official OpenID site.
eRDF versus MicroFormats
Besides being absolutely hilarious to watch, the discussions between the eRDF and the MicroFormats guys was actually quite interesting. Both concepts try to do something fairly equal but where eRDF goes for the most correct standard, MicroFormats goes for something simple, easy but limited. In the end I decided that (next to that the icon looks nicer) MicroFormats just looked as a something anyone could understand. As a result I upgraded my own page with a small hCard in order for people to be able to get my contact details.
EduCampLondon
During BarCamp I had quite some talks with people who are into Education and notice the problem that educators encounter. As a result we (Felix E. Klee, some others, and me) came up with the plan to maybe do a EduCampLondon in order to get educators and tech together. I think it will be very interesting for both the educators who can have a good look at what others might have tried. Additionally tech people could learn what problems educators encounter and maybe what wild ideas they have.
For now we are only in the exploration stage and I think we will have a look at EduCamps that went before, but if anyone wants to help please let me know because all help is welcome.
Werewolf
The game of Werewolf is brilliant. It is the best way to spend a casual evening with geeks and people you would never ever meet. Alper noticed one guy who he knew better than I did, and I noted that I killed him during the game. Hope I didn’t waist any future job opportunities by doing that.
The Day After
After day 2 most of the survivors went to the pub. I was fairly tired after only 1 powernap of an hour between day 1 and 2, so I didn’t stay for long. Still it was fun to see that little people wanted it to end. A couple of us decided to do something extra on Monday because some had to kill a day between BarCampLondon2 and The Future of Web Apps (FOWA) conference that started on Tuesday. So yesterday we went to Hot Fuzz (highly recommended!) and had a beer.
All and all it was a great weekend and I think I am surely going to attend more of these events. Tomorrow it is
Wiki Wednesday and i think it might be fun. Additionally there are some Geek Dinners tomorrow which even Melinda might go to. For more information on BarCampLondon2 go to:
