Weird Mac Missing App Icons Problem

Ever since I had a mac I had the following problem. When my mac is turned on for a long time, at a certain moment icons start missing. Sometimes icons in the Dock, sometimes in the Applications folder, sometimes both (yes, sometimes an app doesn’t have an icon in the Dock while it does in the Applications folder). It even affects Quicksilver, which then can’t start the application.

It is extremely random, sometimes can be solved by restarting, sometimes not. Sometimes it affects starting up applications, sometimes not. It is just the weirdest thing and I can’t figure out what causes it, and google is no help either. Anyone else had this before?

I havent had it either but I have got a bunch of other weird problems. Right now my macbook pro says “No batteries available” whilst it’s not pluged in to the mains! Works ok though, apart from the gpu fan having failed.

Ah, I know that problem. It only showed itself since a recent update. Most of the time it can be solve by connecting the power adapter and then disconnecting.

I’ve never heard of this problem. My Mac Whine has to do with iPhoto. Everytime I delete a photo, which I do regularly, it’ll show up in the trashbin. So far no problem, however when I delete the contents of my trashbin the actual photo get deleted from the harddrive wheareas the link in the trashbin doesn’t get deleted. My iPhoto trashbin is now filled with photo-links I can’t delete. When I try to empty the trashbin filled with links, iPhoto crashes and upon restarting iPhoto my entire thumbnail cache needs to be redone and none of the previous trashbin-links have been removed.

Has anyone heard of this before?

@michel: Have you ever tried to verify ad repair the disk permissions?

That would be no. And I have no idea how to do that, but tomorrow after my morning run I’ll look it up. I’ll let you know how that works out, that is if I can find out what I need to do to do that. Anywho, thank you Cristiano.

So I’ve used Disk Utility and have tried to verify the disk.

    The program reports this:
Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit.

    It also says in red:
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair

So my question to you Cristiano is: How do I repair this disk? Clicking ‘Rapair Disk’ is not an option, simply because the progranm won’t allow it.

  8. Cristiano Gerard Betta

Ahh, that is true because you try to repair your boot disk. You will have to boot from your Mac OS X install disk, launch the same utility there (Disk Utility) and THEN do a repair.

Ah, that makes sense. I’ll keep you updated. I’ll be looking for my Mac OS X install disk now.

    Thank you.

I repaired the disk, but the foney links in iPhoto still exist. I’ve tryed emptying the trash again with the same result: iPhoto crashes.

Ok, last idea: can you drag the photos OUT of your trash bin and to the desktop or somewhere else. If so, you could try to then remove the files using the Terminal (using the rm command).

Nope. I can’t move the images(or lack thereof) from the iPhoto Trashbin. I can only put them back into the iPhoto library, but that won’t do me any good, cause the picture they were linked to has been deleted (remember it’s only the link that remains.)

    Thank you!

I wanted to let you know I fixed the problem. I reinstalled iPhoto and reimported all 10000+ pictures. And it was definitely worth it, the error was really starting bother me.

    Thank you for your help!

    Hahaha, Alsjeblieft.

Didn’t just reinstalling iPhoto work? Or was it both a problem in the Photo library and the iPhoto app?

BTW: I think I/Apple fixed my icon problem. Haven’t had the issue in weeks.

I think the pbroblem was that I had deleted some photo’s from the actual folder. This meant that the incon in iPhoto wasn’t actually going anywhere. So I deleted the thumbnail in iPhoto as well.

I now filled the trashbin with a corrupt file which I couldn’t get rid of. Every other photo I deleted, meant that the original phote got deleted, but that the thumbnail would get stuck in the trashbin. Stuck with the original corrupt file.

So to answer your question; it started with the weak link (the user/me) led to a problem with the library. The app wasn’t actually broken, however it did point to a none existing file. I reinstalled the app, erasing all records of the corrupt thumbnail and reimported all photo’s. I cannot stress enough what a tedious job that was. Suffice it to say, everything works and all photo have been reimported.
