Buying a 160GB Harddisk

wd160gbSo after my second harddisk problem with Samsung (the first problem even caused some data loss) I decided to buy a new harddisk. I ordered a 160GB Western Digital SATA disk for my laptop at about €110, doubling my disk space.

I will send my broken harddisk back to Samsung again and whenever I get this one back I think I will probably sell it. I noticed that I have grown to put quality over price, by not buying the cheapest harddisk but the most reliable one. With all the data I create every week I just don’t want to risk a loss.

Note that some people experienced kernel panics after they installed a WD Scorpio in their MacBooks and MacBook Pro’s. Cause of these kernel panics is a conflict between the ShockGuard technology from WD and the Sudden Motion Sensor of the MacBook. See http://www.macspecialist.org/content/articles/macbook_pro_owners_beware/ You could disable the Sudden Motion Sensor to resolve this conflict. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300724 how to do this.

There are also a lot of people who had no problems at all and the HD works just perfectly.
