Which plugin are you using for this?
I am using the Polyglot plugin (http://fredfred.net/skriker/index.php/polyglot) which isn’t perfect, but it gives you nice separate permalinks and allows for more than 2 languages.
There are some “better” plugins like Gengo, but somehow it is not working in Wordpress 2.3
