Movie Review: Tropic Thunder

I went to see Tropic Thunder on Monday, the new comedy movie by and with Ben Stiller. The movie is about a group of established actors trying to revive their career by making a “Oscar worthy” Vietnam flick, but eventually they end up involved with real rebels without knowing it. The movie is a parody on actors going to so called “Boot Camps” to get into a role and then end up making utter fools of themselves.

Here is the quick international trailer.

After I saw the first trailer I already loved the idea and I must admit that the movie stood its ground. The comedy was funny, the story was very entertaining, and some of the “cameos” were hilarious. Not to sure if this is a movie you need to see in the cinema but it’s definitely a movie you need to see some time just because it’s highly quotable.

I went to the red carpet of The Dark Knight European Premiere yesterday and took some nice snaps of Christian Bale, The Tumbler, and many other interesting actors and fans.

Wanted (2008)

I loved the comic, but unfortunately the film is only loosely based on it. Could have been way more interesting.

Wall-E (2008)

Possibly my favorite Pixar movie ever. Great fun, great story, and an overall joy. See this on the big screen.

starstarstarstarstar

Appleseed (2004)

Interesting Manga, with great graphics and interesting story line. Could have been better though as it was a tad predictive.

starstarstar

Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina (2007)

Great sequel to the first manga with better graphics, a much better story line and just a better overall feel.

starstarstarstar

I Am Legend (2007)

This must have been a very cheap movie, as there are only about 4 characters in the movie. Very boring.

starstar

Layer Cake (2004)

Interesting British movie featuring Daniel Craig as a drugs dealer with a wish to get out. A very interesting plot.

starstarstarstar

Futurama: Bender’s Big Score (2007)

Futurama is back! The story could have been better, but the joy is simple: 1.5 hours of solid Futurama fun!

starstarstar

Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs (2008)

Futurama’s second return to TV since it got cancelled. As good as Bender’s Big Score and a joy to watch.

Melinda managed to get free tickets to Wall-E this Saturday, so now we are apparently going to see it for free together with at least 13 other geeks! Geektastic!

For those of you who don’t know who Wall-E is, here is the trailer:

My Massive 20-Word-Movie-Review #3

It is time for yet another installment of Cristiano’s Massive 20-Word-Movie-Review! (Here are #1 and #2)

Son of Rambow (2007)

Great story about two boys that remake “Rambo”. This is what I hoped “Be Kind, Rewind” would really have been.

starstarstarstar

Iron Man (2008)

Finally a decent comic book interpretation that sticks to what is good about comic. I really want more of this!

starstarstarstarstar

Balls of Fury (2007)

Not as bad as I expected it to be, including some sincerely funny moments. Still a b quality movie though.

starstarstar

Indiana Jones – Raiders of the Lost Ark

Although it’s seriously outdated, it’s still the classic movie that will inspire boy’s adventures for times to come.

starstarstarstarstar

Indiana Jones – The Last Crusade

Sean Connery and Harrison Ford together in one movie. What more do we want of the second best Indiana Jones?

starstarstarstar

Indiana Jones – The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Unfortunately not the best movie ever, nor the best Indy. Still a damn good movie though. A must see movie.

starstarstarstar

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Enjoyable, occasionally very funny, but not the perfect movie Melinda made it be. Good movie for watching as a couple.

starstarstar

Knocked Up

I think you need to be in that happy place where you want a few kids, to really enjoy this movie.

Movie Review: Iron Man

May 4
Posted on May 4, 2008 18:17 in Movies

So I got to see Iron Man last friday with a load of movie buffs/comic geeks, and even though I am not that much of a comic geek, which would make this look like yet another comic book adaptation. But, I have to admit: I….LOVED…. IT!!!!

Iron Man is a funny, well thought out movie, which happens to stay way clear of many of the common comic book interpretation mistakes that Hollywood has made in the past. Most of all they made sure that stuff doesn’t like too much like it was all done in CGI, which for me made the movie so much more believable

The actors were very well picked (Robert Downey Junior as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Jeff Bridges as his mentor) but I don’t think they will stand up against Christian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger as The Joker in the upcoming The Dark Knight movie.

Iron Man wasn’t the best movie though that I’d ever seen, but looking back at movies like Spiderman 2 and 3 this is just so much in a different league, so go and watch it!.

TIP: Make sure to stay seated until past the credits for a little but very important extra.

After the previous massive movie review I decided to do this more often as a service to all you undecided movie goers.

Juno (2007)

Very witty and lighthearted comedy, with some marvelous dialogues. Really worth watching and worth the Oscar, a must-see for all.

starstarstarstar

A Tale of Two Sisters (2007)

A Korean psycho-horror with a marvelous plot. If you like these kind of movies than this is really a must-see.

starstarstarstar

The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)

Typical costume drama with a predictable story and annoying camerawork. How many shots through fences/windows/bushes do you need?

starstar

The Lives of Others (2006)

A very touching movie about espionage in former east-Germany. Very worthy of winning the 2007 Oscar for best foreign movie.

starstarstarstarstar

Stargate: The Ark of Truth (2008)

Odd mix between a movie and a tv episode, and it wasn’t even a good episode. Still love Stargate though.

starstar

27 Dresses (2008)

Cheap romantic-comedy with some great actors, a good story line, but very annoying extras. Sadly too late for valentine’s.

My Massive 20-Word-Movie-Review

Mar 2
Posted on March 2, 2008 1:42 in Movies

I have been watching quite a few movies lately. Mainly new ones but also a few old classics that I still hadn’t seen. I came to this because Melinda is in The Netherlands for a while and we have basically finished most of the TV shows we use to watch. I didn’t want to write a large review for all of them, so here is my 20-word-movie-review for all of them.

The Bank Job (2008)

A “true” fiction story told as a documentary which doesn’t help the suspense. Set in London though, which is “interesting”.

starstar

No Country for Old Men (2007)

Typical Oscar winner, with some great scenes. Somehow it seems to stick but don’t know why. Couple of “quotable” scenes.

starstarstarstar

Rambo: First Blood (1982)

Made in my birth year, but never seen it before. Sadly enough it’s quite boring. Die Hard was way better!

starstar

Cidade de Deus (2002)

#2 movie to see of this century according to IMDB. Don’t really agree but again an Oscar nominee that sticks.

starstarstarstar

Helvetica (2007)

Fairly boring documentary about a Type Face (Font). What else do I need to say to make this 20 words?

star

Blades of Glory (2007)

Typical Will Ferrell movie, so you need to like those movies to like this. Jon Heder balanced it out though.

starstarstar

Be Kind Rewind (2008)

It had some great scenes, but I’ve never seen so many people look around after the movie going: was that it?
